Tahokaku, a majestic space protected by Buddha and not open to the public, boasts a magnificent space. Over 4,000 statues of Yakushi Nyorai, Shaka Nyorai, Amitabha Nyorai, and Taho Nyorai are enshrined on the 20m-high wall. Here, we will hear the story of the pagoda and an introduction to Buddhism.
Flowers on the stone of Buddha's feet
When you look down from the top of Tahokaku, you will see the 'Buddha Foot Stone' shining in the spotlight. The Buddha's foot stone is a precious stone made of black marble, featuring the 11 auspicious signs of the Buddha's footprints. You can scatter flowers on the feet of Buddha. (*Sanka is an ancient Buddhist ritual of scattering flowers.)
You can enjoy a spectacular view of Kyoto from the 'West Gate,' which is usually closed. The beautiful vermilion-painted building, rebuilt in 1963, has been designated a national important cultural property. The sunset seen from here is truly beautiful, offering a panoramic view of the entire cityscape of Kyoto. This place is also not open to the public, so we will unlock the specially secured gate and show you around.
